I am excited to begin a new year at Piney Grove teaching sixth grade Social Studies and Science! It is always a pleasure meeting new parents and students and getting our year started off strong.
The sixth grade supply list can be found on the Piney Grove website and a paper copy was sent home with each student. Please try to have these items available to your student by the first few days of school.
Each student will be issued a lock for their hallway lockers. Please see the sheet sent home from open house for instructions on how to open the lock as well as the specific combination for your student’s lock. Please make sure your student brings the lock back to school!
Please sign and return all of the paperwork sent home with your student from open house or the first day of school in a timely manner to keep things flowing smoothly.
Social Studies Our Social Studies curriculum primarily focuses on the ancient world. Topics we will study are Geography, Early Humans, Egypt, the Ottoman Empire, Mesopotamia, Indus River Valley, India, China, Japan, Greece, Rome, the Byzantine Empire, Mayans, Incans, Aztecs, England, and Renaissance and Reformation. Social Studies will consist of me lecturing while the students take notes, various projects, regular assignments, and unit tests and quizzes. Discussions and presentations are also key components of my Social Studies classes. Science For Science this year, we will cover topics such as Scientific Inquiry, Energy, Matter, Forces, Motion, Earth in the Universe, Earth Systems, Ecosystems, and Living Organisms to name a few. I only teach one Science period, so only a select group of students will have me for Science. I teach every student for Social Studies. Expectations I make learning an enjoyable time for the students and we follow five simple rules while in my classroom.
Be Polite
Be Prompt
Be Prepared
Be Productive
Participate
Information and guidelines will gradually be given to the students over the next few days to help them learn the expectations and procedures of Piney Grove. Please know that I am always available to answer questions or concerns you may have throughout the year. Email is the best way to reach me quickly as I check and reply regularly throughout the day. You may also call the school if you need to speak with me in person and set up an appointment or leave me a message to call you back. Sending a note by your student always works as well. My email address, school phone number, school website, and my classroom website are all provided at the bottom of this letter. Also, I have a classroom Facebook group for parents which is listed below as well. I look forward to a great year!
